Introduction

This retreat is held at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Institute for Vedanta and Sanskrit, founded by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, located in the Nilgiri foothills, the scenic part of South India. The retreat would be attended by a group of individuals from all over the world who are interested in learning more about the Self, the universe and its cause. This setting would give a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional teaching of Vedanta.

The program consists of study of the following texts:

Panchadashi, Chapter 10

This text is authored by Vidyaranya, one of the well-known teachers of Vedanta in the tradition of Adi Shankaracharya. One cannot but marvel at the way the author conveys the vision of oneness and non-duality. The chapter 10 named ‘Nāṭakadīpa Prakaraṇam’, uses the analogy of a lamp in a dancing theatre to explain how the single, unchanging consciousness illuminates all changing phenomena. One actor plays many roles, experiences joy, sorrow, fear, triumph, yet never loses the knowledge: “I am an actor, not the role.” Similarly, the one Ātman appears as many jīvas, performs actions, enjoys results, while remaining free and unaffected. This is not psychological distancing, but ontological clarity.

Selected Verses, Chapter 18 of Bhagavad Gita

Chapter 18 brings the Bhagavad Gītā to a powerful and integrative close. It does not introduce a new teaching; rather, it gathers, clarifies, and resolves the entire vision of the Gītā into living a coherent life of wise action and inner freedom. Chapter 18 presents mokṣa not as an escape from life, but as a vision of responsibility, and inner completeness grounded in wisdom.
