Introduction

During this retreat at Haus Ebersberg in Wenzigerode (Germany), you would have a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional teaching of Vedanta. This retreat would be attended by a group of individuals from all over the world who are interested in learning more about the Self, the universe and its cause.

The program consists of study of Mundaka Upanishad and Bhagavad Gita – Chapter 17.

The teaching of these two texts will be accompanied with morning meditations, practice of meditative movements, vedic chanting and dialogue sessions.
Participants are required to register at www.discovervedanta.com . Your registration is considered complete when booking fees are paid. The closing date for registration for this retreat is 15 June 2025. Seats are limited, so do not wait to register!

The program consists of study of the following texts:

Mundaka Upanishad

Mundaka Upanishad is often quoted in the traditional commentaries of different Vedanta texts because of its brilliant and comprehensive unfoldment of the teaching. It begins with a dialogue between a student, Saunaka, and his teacher, Angiras. Saunaka asks: ‘Is there anything knowing which everything is as well known?’ The teacher Angiras replies by saying yes there is one thing knowing which everything is as well known. He says that the cause of this universe (Ishvara) manifests through every form. Knowing the nature of the cause as pervading me and everything else, I can be free from every sense of limitation. The teaching of this Upanishad covers all important aspects of the teaching and helps us to understand that everything here is one, and I am one with Ishvara.

Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 17

The chapter 17 discusses in a profound and beautiful manner ways for individuals to initiate personal transformation by presenting a model of three gunas or qualities- namely sattva, rajas and tamas. It also makes us see nuances of 3 gunas as applicable in having sraddha (approach to teaching), danam (charity), yajna (prayers), ahara (eating habits) and tapas (religious disciplines). Lord Krishna, the master teacher, shows us that merely having faith or undertaking religious disciplines is not enough, one has to assess its value according to what world vision it contains, what is the intention of the person who is undertaking it and what is the result it brings to individual, community and humanity in general. Lord Krishna thus makes us see beyond the usual meanings of charity, religious disciplines, etc. and reveals the real spirit that has to be cultivated to grow as a human being so that we can, endowed with this maturity, gain ultimate freedom.
